Security Message for U.S. Citizens

This message is to alert U.S. citizens of a general strike planned for Friday, June 30, 2017, in Rio de Janeiro. In the event of a citywide strike, significant disruptions to public transportation and other services may occur. Additionally, the Consulate has been advised of planned protests for Friday, June 30, 2017, starting at 17:00 until 23:59 at Igreja Nossa Senhora da Candelária, organized by UerjResiste. Black Bloc and their splinter groups have also indicated their intent to participate in the demonstration. U.S. citizens should avoid protests and areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Brazil are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.
U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Brazil are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in order to receive the most up-to-date security information. By enrolling, U.S. citizens will easily receive updates in case of emergency. U.S. citizens without Internet access may enroll directly with the Consulate.
