Celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations: US offers English course for 300 Afro-Brazilian and indigenous youth

The program is free, online, and registrations are open until February 1

Brasília, January 11, 2024: The Embassy and Consulates of the United States in Brazil, through the Regional English Language Teaching Office (RELO), in partnership with Grupo +Unidos, select 300 young individuals for the Access E2C 2024 program (English to Connect, Communicate, Catalyze), a course that promotes language education for the Afro-Brazilian and indigenous populations. Interested candidates must reside in Brazil, be between 18 and 40 years old, and have basic knowledge of English. Registrations are open until February 1, at the link: https://www.maisunidos.org/inscricoes-access-e2c/

The online classes, with a workload of 210 hours, will be divided into six hours per week throughout the year 2024. In addition to synchronous classes, selected participants will take part in extracurricular activities and mentorship with specialized professionals. The course, geared towards the job market, aims to develop participants’ language skills, adding value to their careers.

Scott Chiverton, director of the Regional English Language Teaching Office in Brazil, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative: “Understanding different cultures is fundamental to promoting global unity,” he said. “Language acts as a powerful tool that enables us not only to communicate but also to empathize with others’ experiences. Through Access E2C’s immersive approach to teaching English language skills within diverse communities, we are breaking barriers and facilitating new opportunities for growth.”

“Access E2C goes beyond English language teaching. It is an initiative that empowers connections and learning for both the job market and personal trajectories. The partnership with the US Embassy and Consulates in this project strengthens our desire to create inclusive educational opportunities,” comments Daniel Grynberg, executive director of Grupo +Unidos.

The project is part of the Access program, which has been happening worldwide since 2004 and is offered by the US Department of State in more than 86 countries. In Brazil, since 2008, it has already benefited more than 3 thousand young people. The 2024 edition is part of the celebration of the 200 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the US. This celebration aims to highlight the diplomatic ties that have enabled mutually beneficial relationships between two of the most diverse and prosperous democracies in the world. Throughout 2024, a variety of cultural events, seminars, exchange programs, and joint initiatives will emphasize shared elements of the historical traditions of both nations.
