Over the past decade the northeastern city of Recife has developed into one of Brazil’s leading technology centers, hosting an increasingly dense cluster of firms specializing in software application development, information and communications technology, media production services and other related industries. At the core of this cluster are the Porto Digital office park/incubator and the CESAR research institute, together comprising one of the largest technology parks in Latin America. The complex is home to hundreds of firms (including several familiar U.S. names) and thousands of highly qualified workers in the city’s rapidly revitalizing historic district.
