Subject: Demonstration Alert – U. S. Consulate General Porto Alegre, Brazil (August 12, 2019)
Location: Esquina Democratica in the Centro Historico of Porto Alegre
Event: Demonstrations are expected to take place on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, beginning at 5 pm local time and lasting until midnight. The demonstration intends to protest policies of the federal government. Spontaneous demonstrations in other parts of the city are also possible. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the demonstrations could become violent. Past protests in the Porto Alegre metropolitan region have included demonstrators blocking the major roadways into the city with burning tires and other debris. Protestors have also blocked the entrances and exits to parking lots for public transportation preventing busses from circulating in the city.
U.S. government personnel are advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place.

- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
