Carrie Muntean arrived in Brazil to serve as the Consul General for the U.S. Consulate in Porto Alegre in July 2023.  She is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Prior to this assignment, Carrie was the Deputy Director of the Office of Central American Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.  She also has served as Director of a team dedicated to expanding the Departmen’s culture of leadership, management, and innovation, and continues as an adjunct leadership coach for the Department of State.

Carrie’s last overseas assignment was as Consul General in Managua, Nicaragua. Her other overseas tours included Moscow, Panama, London, and Luanda.  She speaks Spanish and Portuguese, and a small amount of Russian.  Prior to joining the U.S. Department of State, Carrie researched methods to improve census collection at the National Academies of Sciences of the United States.  She has a Bachelor of Arts from Adelphi University in New York and a Master of Arts in International Affairs from The George Washington University in D.C.  She originally hails from East Hampton, Connecticut, also known as “Belltown.”  She and her husband have two kids.
