Health Alert: U. S. Embassy Brasilia, Brazil (January 24, 2018)

Location:  The CDC previously identified areas in Brazil where vaccination against yellow fever is recommended and updated list now includes:

  • All of Rio de Janeiro State, including the city of Rio de Janeiro.
  • All of São Paulo State, including the city of São Paulo
  • All of Espirito Santo State
  • A number of cities in Bahia State

Event:  Following a resurgence in human cases of yellow fever, the Government of Brazil recently extended the areas where vaccination is recommended and has initiated intensive vaccination campaigns in major cities in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Bahia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization have updated their recommendations regarding vaccinations for persons living in or traveling to Brazil.

Actions to Take:  U.S. citizens living in, or planning to travel to Brazil, should read the following guidance, in addition to the CDC Alert above, to learn about yellow fever and areas in Brazil where vaccinations are recommended:

Vaccination is only effective if received at least ten days prior to arrival in an at- risk area, and supplies of yellow fever vaccine are limited in Brazil, so travelers should obtain vaccination prior to traveling here. Supplies in the United States can be limited as well, so travelers should plan accordingly.
