Message for U.S. Citizens: New Social Security Number Requirements for Passport Applications – Updated November 16, 2016

The United States Embassy in Brasilia informs U.S. citizens that effective October 1, 2016, passport applicants must provide a Social Security number (SSN) on their application, in accordance with 22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 C.F.R 51.60(f).

If you have never been issued a Social Security number, you must submit a signed statement including the phrase, “I swear under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States that the following is true and correct:  I have never been issued a Social Security Number by the Social Security Administration.”
