Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Nationwide Demonstrations Affecting Porto Alegre June 30, 2017
June 30, 2017
The U.S. Consulate Porto Alegre alerts U.S. citizens that Porto Alegre and other cities in the State of Rio Grande do Sul will be affected by a planned general strike on June 30, 2017.
Media reporting and postings on social networking sites indicate that demonstrations are planned for Friday, June 30, 2017 in Porto Alegre as well as several other cities in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and throughout Brazil.
Past demonstrations in the Porto Alegre metropolitan region have included demonstrators blocking the major roadways into the city and near to Salgado Filho Airport with burning tires and other debris. Protestors have also blocked the entrances and exits to parking lots for public transportation preventing busses from circulating in the city. Current media reporting indicates that demonstrations may also occur in the area of the Legislative Assembly and Palacio Piratini in the Centro region of Porto Alegre.
U.S. citizens should avoid protests and areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Brazil are urged to monitor local news reports and plan their activities accordingly.
