Security Alert – United States Mission to Brazil (December 14, 2018)

Location: Abadiânia

Event: Brazilian authorities are investigating allegations of sexual misconduct involving the Casa de Dom Inácio de Loyola and its leader Joao Teixeira de Faria (a.k.a. John of God).  Media report several hundred women have made complaints to local authorities.

Actions to Take:

  • Contact Brazilian law enforcement and the U.S. Embassy or a U.S. Consulate with questions or if you believe you have been a victim of sexual assault.  Contact information for the U.S. Embassy and consulates is listed below.  Callers in the United States may also contact the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs at +1-888-407-4747.
  • Call Brazilian emergency services at 190 if you are in an emergency situation in Brazil.
  • Follow media reports closely and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program ( if you are planning to travel to the Casa de Dom Inácio de Loyola in Abadiânia.
