Security Alert – United States Mission to Brazil (October 22, 2018)
Location: Brasilia
Event: During the early morning hours on Monday, October 22, a group of individuals detonated an explosive device in an automated teller machine (ATM) at Pier 21, a local shopping center in Brasilia. After detonating the device, the individuals exchanged gunfire with local police as they fled the area.
Throughout Brazil, please be aware of your movements late at night and early in the morning, even in areas which may be considered safe. Criminals often target ATMs and businesses in the early hours of the morning when there are fewer witnesses and law enforcement response times may be delayed. Avoid using ATMs in unfamiliar, secluded, or lightly protected areas. If you opt to use an ATM, select those that are located inside of secure facilities, such as an airport, hospital, bank, or government building.
