Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration

U.S. Consulate General Rio de Janeiro

The U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro alerts U.S. citizens in Rio de Janeiro that media reporting and postings on social media indicate a large demonstration is planned for Rio de Janeiro on Monday, December 12, 2016. Reporting indicates that the demonstration will be in the vicinity of the State Legislative Assembly (ALERJ). Police and security forces have historically allowed peaceful protests and urged protestors to act accordingly. However, some demonstrations in Brazil in recent months have resulted in violent clashes.

U.S. citizens should avoid the protests and areas where large gatherings may occur.  Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Brazil are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.
