Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations Occurring in Brasilia

The U.S. Embassy in Brasilia alerts U.S. citizens that several unforeseen demonstrations are occurring on the Esplanada in Brasilia today, November 29, 2016. According to reports from the Military Police, approximately 4,000 people have already gathered, and the number is expected to increase. Participants are demonstrating due to a proposed law referred to as PEC 258. The Military Police is responding to the protest activities, but does not have information on when the demonstrators will disburse. The streets around the Esplanada from the Rodoviaria to the Palacio Planalto are subject to closure.
U.S. citizens should avoid protests and areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Brazil are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.
