The American engineer, Nagin Cox, from NASA, a special American agency, works in the jet propulsion laboratory and is coming to the city for a series of events, in which she will speak about her professional trajectory and the role of women in science. Cox’s schedule in Salvador starts on Tuesday September 30 with a visit to Plataforma State College where she will engage with students and teachers. On the morning of October 1, a Wednesday, the NASA engineer will be at the Catholic University of Salvador (UCSAL) for a seminar titled Science, Technology, Innovation, and Gender (Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovação, e Gênero). During the afternoon, she will talk with teenagers at the Steve Biko institute and from there to the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), where she’ll participate in the Women in Science Careers Colloquium (Colóquio para Mulheres na Carreira Científica). Nagin Cox’s visit to Bahia is the work of a partnership between the U.S. General Consulate, Catholic University of Salvador (UCSAL), and the Women’s Interdisciplinary Studies Nucleus from UFBA. Cox currently works in the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) that’s responsible for the development of the Curiosity Rover, used for research on Mars. The rover has been on the planet since 2012. For this mission, she worked as a systems engineer, and today she coordinates the mission operations team of the rover.
