U.S. Embassy opens 125 vacancies for a basic English course in the Legal Amazon

The course will address sustainability aligned with language learning

Brasília, November 13, 2023: The United States Embassy in Brazil has opened registration for the Access Amazon program, aimed at teaching basic English and expanding leadership potential through the exchange of experiences and practices related to the environment and issues of the Amazon, its people, and cultures. Interested individuals should be literate in Portuguese and can apply until December 18, at 12 p.m., through the link: https://www.maisunidos.org/access_amazon/

In this second edition of the program, which will take place between February 2024 and June 2025, 125 slots will be available for Indigenous people, quilombolas, and riverside communities between the ages of 20 and 40, residing in the Legal Amazon states. The project is implemented in collaboration with the +Unidos Group.

The program is primarily aimed at individuals with no prior knowledge of English who reside in the Brazilian states that make up the Legal Amazon. If there are available slots, in order of priority, applications from activists, academics, and professionals engaged in sustainability issues in the region will also be accepted.

The online course will offer five groups of 25 students each and 360 online class hours, 160 more than in the first edition. During the classes, participants will experience the language while sharing their experiences and practices related to the environment and issues of the Amazon, its people, and cultures.

“With a better command of English, they will be able to advocate for themselves and their communities at an international level, as well as be better prepared for opportunities where the language is a prerequisite,” emphasizes Scott Chiverton, the director of the U.S. Embassy Regional English Language Office.

Daniel Grynberg, the Executive Director of the +Unidos Group, emphasizes that “the purpose is to make the language truly impact the lives of those living in the different states of the Legal Amazon, promoting social inclusion.”
