Samaruddin “Sam” Stewart will minister lectures in Sao Paulo and Brasilia from 19 to 23 August
From August 19 to 23, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates will bring to Brazil the media expert Samaruddin “Sam ” Stewart to minister lectures and discuss the use of technologies to combatmisinformation, new ways of producing and distributing news, and new trends of journalism.
Sam Stewart will visit São Paulo and Brasilia, where he’ll meet with journalists, professors, students, and members of civil society to share his experience and discuss ways to cope with the burden of information and the difficulty to determine the veracity of what is propagated in digital media, as well as techniques to encourage critical thinking among young news consumers.
In São Paulo, Sam will participate in the third Congress of the Association of Education Journalists (JEDUCA), give an open lecture at Cásper Líbero University, and talk to journalists who are engaged in fact-checking agencies and other projects that combat misinformation. In Brasilia, he will talk to students from UniCEUB, Catholic University, UNB, and IESB, as well as local journalists.
Sam is a Project Manager for the U.S. Professional Journalists Society Training Program (SPJ) in partnership with the Google News Initiative. He was awarded by Knight Foundation Prototype Grant for his innovative work in technical verification journalism, and Stanford University John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship where he researched countering misinformation and was also selected a US Department of State Franklin Fellow. Worked for AOL News, Agence France-Presse, and the Arizona Republic as editor and/or director.
