The memorandum establishes partnerships in several areas, such as education, health, environment, science and technology, migration, trade and investment, agriculture, and tourism
Recife, April 25, 2023: The U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, and Pernambuco State Governor, Raquel Lyra, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, on Monday (24), at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas. The agreement consolidates the intention to expand partnerships in several areas, such as education, health, environment, science and technology, migration, trade and investment, agriculture and tourism. The vice-governor of Pernambuco, Priscila Krause, and the U.S. Consul General in Recife, Jessica Simon, attended the event.
“The signing of this memorandum with the U.S. Consulate General is an important milestone in expanding international cooperation and attracting investments to Pernambuco State. The Government of Pernambuco has intensified the work of international relations. In these first four months, we met with the largest economies in the world seeking cooperation agreements like the one we signed, bringing more knowledge and experiences to our state. We are confident that this memorandum will lure resources so that we can face the challenges of the state,” said Governor Lyra.
This was Ambassador Bagley’s first visit to Brazil’s to Recife. During the event, she stated that one of the priorities of the agreement is the strengthening of English language learning. “The signing of the memorandum demonstrates how cooperation can lead to results that benefit the U.S. and Brazil, not only nationally, but also regionally. I also think it is important to highlight our partnership in the environmental front, a priority of President Biden. Education is also an ever-present element: we want to strengthen English language learning and foster STEM careers for girls and women”.
The memorandum provides the exchange of best practices and technical visits by both countries. This is the first memorandum of understanding signed with a Northeastern state since Ambassador Bagley arrived in Brazil.
