Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Brasilia, Brazil (September 2, 2020)
Location: Brazil
Event: Update on Lawful Permanent Resident Status during COVID-19
Despite the travel complexities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) may still lose their resident status if they are outside the United States for more than a year. LPR status permits foreign nationals to legally reside in the United States and the status is often associated with having a “green card.” U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has not modified the continuous residence requirements for lawful permanent residents. Those who remain outside of the United States for more than one year will be subject to loss of their LPR status. For any questions related to LPR status, please go to the USCIS website.
Actions to Take:
-
Review dates of travel and expiration dates of official documents of LPR relatives.
-
Research continuous residence requirements in the USCIS policy manual.
-
Contact USCIS with any questions related to LPR status.
