USA Donates Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Equipment to Rio de Janeiro StateFire Department

Material will be used during the Rio 2016 Games and will remain as a legacy for the Fire Department 

Rio de Janeiro, 8 de agosto de 2016 – Responding to a request from Rio’s State Fire Department, to help build capacity to respond to to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents both during the period of the Rio 2016 Games and beyond, the Consulate General of the United States donated equipment to the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department, yesterday, August 8. 

The equipment will be used by the Grupamento de Operações com Produtos Perigosos (GOPP) officers during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will remain as a legacy for the Fire Department and the population of the state of Rio de Janeiro. This example of  U.S. – Brazil cooperation includes training for firefighting professionals who would use the equipment in the event of a CBRN emergency. 

The donation ceremony took place at the Firefighters’ Headquarters, in Centro, with the presence of Consul General of the United States in Rio de Janeiro, James Story.  The Consul General said, “This partnership is very important for the U.S. government and for the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro, because we want the Fire Department to be prepared to react in the most effective manner possible in case of an eventual accident.”
