“The Magic of the Amazon” highlights people, landscapes and initiatives contributing to the conservation of its wealth and biodiversity, helping keep the forest standing
Brasilia, September 21, 2023: From September 22 to October 2, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Casa Thomas Jefferson, opens the photo exhibit “The Magic of the Amazon”. The photos were selected through a contest launched on World Biodiversity Day. The exhibit seeks to highlight the importance of the Amazon and its people, showcasing people and their communities, landscapes and initiatives that contribute to the conservation of its wealth and biodiversity, as well as the projects that USAID has been developing in the region. Free admission to exhibit.
The exhibit consists of 18 photos: 12 from the contest and 6 from USAID’s collection. The five winners are professional photographers, researchers and participants in USAID projects in the Amazon. The winner of the honorable mention is Thiago Theo, a photographer from Minas Gerais who accompanied an expedition of one of USAID’s projects on Brazil nuts. He previously photographed in various parts of Brazil and other countries. After its run at the Thomas Jefferson in Asa Sul, the exhibition will be displayed at the Casa branches in the city until the end of the year.
According to the director of USAID/Brazil, Mark Carrato, “This exhibit narrates the relevance of our work and shows the importance of collaborating with local partners. USAID has a historical partnership with Brazil of more than 60 years. Over the past decade, we have worked with government, civil society and the private sector to co-create models that protect biodiversity and drive a sustainable economy for Amazonian communities – two interconnected priorities for USAID”. Carrato took up the post in August 2023, and previously served as the Coordinator of the U.S. government’s Power Africa program.
